1942 |
Alexander first saw action in 1942 and by mid-1942, his Regiment was captured at Tobruk during the Battle of Gazala, part of the First Battle of El Alamein. Tobruk was surrendered to Italian and German forces on 21st June 1942. Alexander [aged 20] was one of two OWs to be killed on this day, Friday 29th May 1942 in the same action and one of three to lie in Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma in Libya.
Just prior to his death, and by an extraordinary coincidence, Alexander had come across his elder brother Norman, whose convoy his own tank had assisted on its way by suppressing enemy fire. Norman Harvey was subsequently captured and remained a POW for the duration.
Son of Kenneth L. Harvey & Amy H. Harvey of Fairwarp, Sussex.
