1943 |
George was on holiday in the Alps when war broke out but hurried back to join his Territorial regiment and was quickly commissioned. However, much against his will he remained in England for over a year as an instructor, but eventually was posted to a front-line unit of his regiment which landed at Bone, North Africa, in November 1942.
As a Forward Observation Officer he was severely wounded in an attack in the Pont de Fahs area on 12th/13th January 1943. The ground was lost and so the wounded had to be left facing death or capture. His death is recorded as Wednesday 13th January at the age of 26. George is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Son of Maurice Gustave Scotchburn Swallow & Mary Alice Swallow of West Hartlepool, Co. Durham.
