Wilfred went out to South Africa to join the BSA Police. However, on the outbreak of war he returned to England and joined the RAF. Much of his flying training was undertaken in the USA and in Canada, where he obtained his “wings". Returning to this country he was posted to 12 Squadron and at the time of his last flight was pilot of a Lancaster bomber.
His aircraft, Lancaster III ED-714 [PH-K], took off from RAF Wickenby on the night of 13th April for operations over Italy. His aircraft was involved in a mid-air collision with another Lancaster Bomber [W-4828] of 103 Squadron having crashed in the vicinity of Le Mans (Sarthe) France in the early hours of Wednesday 14th April 1943. Due to the condition of their remains, the crew are all buried together in Le Mans West Cemetery, Sarthe, France.
