Despite the inclement weather, the tennis season at Wrekin is now in full swing with daily training sessions and a highly competitive match already played against Shrewsbury School.
Wrekin has a number of very talented tennis players within its ranks and there is clearly potential to develop participation in the sport at all levels of the school community. It is to this end that we have arranged for pupils to take part in a Davis Cup Tennis Coaching Masterclass at Wrekin.
We are privileged to be welcoming to school Danny Sapsford, a former professional tennis player and member of Great Britain’s Davis Cup squad, to offer pupils an afternoon of expert coaching based on his extensive experience of playing on the ATP tour. Followers of tennis during the late 1990s will remember Danny from his appearance on Centre Court in the third round of Wimbledon in 1999 where he was defeated by Pete Sampras.
Danny will be accompanied by current ATP professional and Davis Cup champion, Dominic Inglot. Dominic has enjoyed a highly successful playing career as a doubles specialist and he was a member of Great Britain’s winning Davis Cup team in 2015. You can watch a brief summary of his Davis Cup career highlights by clicking here.
In addition to sharing their wealth of expertise, Danny and Dominic will also be holding a question and answer session during the middle of the afternoon to give pupils the chance to quiz them on the realities of life as a professional tennis player. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our pupils to work with two tennis stars who have reached the highest levels of the sport.
It is the pupils' ambition to raise £5000 for Danny Sapsford’s charity: ‘Bright Ideas for Tennis’ to fund a series of free tennis activity sessions in Shropshire for adults and children with learning, sensory and physical disabilities. If they meet their target the pupils will be able to take part in the 24 Hour Tennis Marathon at the prestigious National Tennis Centre in Roehampton in Septmeber, where they will join pupils from the top schools in the country, including Harrow, in raising awareness and further funds for the charity.
If you are able to support Wrekin's pupils in this challenge, the justgiving page for the event can be found here.
