This remarkable photograph depicts the School’s founder, Sir John Bayley, at the centre of the group which formed his Cycling Club.

Whilst we cannot identify everyone in the picture, we know that the boy on the right hand side with a penny-farthing was James Higginbotham who attended Wrekin between 188 and 86 (approx.). On one occasion it was reported that he rode his penny-farthing to his home in Cheshire.

The figure in a kepi was a member of staff who had a tricycle which was adapted to accommodate his disability.

The building in the background was known at the time as Gladtheim, later Highfield. It was rented for a number of years by John Bayley to provide extra accommodation during the years when the old main school being was constructed.
