This has been another good year for the Duke of Edinburgh Award here at Wrekin, though both unusual and curtailed due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the closing of the school over the summer term.
As ever, the year began with 62 of the new Fourth Form Bronze entry going out to Llangollen to practise their walking and camping skills.
Soon after 14 Gold candidates took on the rigors of Dartmoor to do their Practice Expedition. Later on, during the October half term, they were successful in completing their Qualifying Expedition with the assessor describing them as the best group of young people that he had experienced in all of his years assessing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The Easter term was an active one with the new Lower 6
th Silver entry and all of the Bronze candidates doing consolidation training, both in the classroom and out on the Shropshire hills.
With the outbreak of Covid-19 and the closing of the school, expeditions came to a complete standstill. It became impossible to compete the Bronze and Silver Qualifying Expeditions or do any Gold classroom training. All is not lost, however, as with the easing of the lock-down restrictions it is planned to run the expeditions in the Christmas 2020 term so those who were waiting for an expedition can now catch up.
It is still particularly pleasing is to see how many of our pupils leave Wrekin with all three DofE Awards completed, a record that is unmatched by other schools in the area. The recent publication by The Award of local and national statistics show us leading the field yet again against some much larger schools.
Hopefully by the end of the Christmas term 2020 we will be back on track and DofE will continue as normal once again.
