Sue Dawnson (née Romero) arrived at Wrekin with the third intake of girls at school. To her delight there were not enough of them to play team sports, or wear a uniform. Sue studied French, English and was the only girl in her Maths set at A Level.
The Centenary Theatre was being constructed at the time, so drama performances and the Summer Ball took place in the Memorial Hall (much like last year with the construction of the new Music School!).
Some of the greatest memories were made Scottish dancing at the Forest Glen tea rooms (which stood at the base of the Wrekin and was carefully moved and reconstructed in Blists Hill Victorian Town in 1994); living in the basement of Halcyon in Middle Sixth, downstairs from the Headmaster who would occasionally invite them up for a glass of Madeira; performing as the First XV at the comedy revue in Lower Sixth - it caused much hilarity when the curtain went up and there we all were posing as if for a team photo; evenings in the Sixth Form bar; returning during the first term of her gap year to play Paulina in the school production of A Winter’s Tale.
Sue remembers her time at Wrekin with great fondness and is grateful for Ron Ward’s coaching for the Oxbridge exams, his English lessons and for doing a brilliant job as Housemaster.
Sue has also kindly helped us name the group pictured:
