I have recently read Geoffery Holroyde's, account of his time at Wrekin College in wartime.
I was born 19 th September 1927, just year before Geoffery, and was in Saxon House when Geoffery arrived.
I vividly recall his rendition on the Chapel organ of Ethel Smith's Tico Tico, a hit piece at the time.
We were all very impressed at the time untill he was interupted by Padre Drake !
If the Photograph is downloaded, Geoffery is second from the right first row standing, next to him is David Main, later Head of House and Head of School, I am next to David, a little futher along immediately behind JSK,(Bonzo) is Eric ( Cecil) Rhodes who as a Surgeon Lieutenant serving on HMS Maidstone was awarded the Albert Medal, posthumously, for rescuing some of the crew of the submarine HMS Sidon, from the bottom of Portsmouth Harbour,15 sailors and Eric diad in the tragery..
At the far end seated is James Pendle, later to become Chairman of The School Governers.
My lasting memory of Wrekin in Wartime was helping a local farmer pulling up sugar beet, getting very wet and cold one weekend, the following weekend , we helped pack war materials at the Royal Ordinance factory at Donnington, Nr Oakengates, our contibutination to the ' war effort '
Happy memories
