Robert was born in the Punjab, where he spent most of his early childhood. He became a keen and accomplished tennis player, so much so that whilst still a pupil at Wrekin he participated in the junior lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon in the Summer of 1937.
The following article appeared in the Daily Mirror on 8th September 1937.
Robert attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich after leaving Wrekin and was commissioned to the Royal Artillery on 16th December 1939. He saw service in West Africa and in India, where he had a serious illness. After his recovery he was posted to Burma in command of a battery. In February 1945 he went on patrol to reconnoitre a forward position and never returned. Initially it was presumed that he had been captured and was a prisoner of war, but this was subsequently changed to ‘missing, believed killed’. The date recorded was Wednesday 28th February 1945 at the age of 24.
