Old Wrekinian Rory Kleinveldt has been appointed Head Coach of Western Province, South Africa.
Rory was part of the 1st XI Wrekin College cricket team in the summer of 1999. He was over from South Africa for the summer as part of the Exchange Programme.
The team had a very successful season under the guidance of their coach Michael de Weymarn, winning five matches, drawing four and only losing one game (lost only to Bloxham despite scoring over 200 runs before declaring).
Rory was a very good all-rounder. He topped the bowling averages, taking 20 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls in a match.
This was written in the Wrekinian that year:- 'For any opponents to handle Kleinveldt’s pace and swing off a mercifully short run, combined with accuracy enough to bowl a 7/2 field found nearly all batsmen in trouble.'
Rory was also a very accomplished middle order batsman with the ability to score quickly. He was third in the batting averages with an average of 46.7 runs, which included 55 against Hereford.
Again in the Wrekinian:- 'Kleinveldt could be absolutely devastating with a bat as shown by his 55 in six overs against Hereford. Everything was clean and with purpose and given his age of only 16, Wrekin has rarely seen such power."
Rory achieved his full colours in that season.
