Leonard clearly had a keen sense of adventure, persuading his mother to allow him to undertake a solo adventure to  Albania whilst trouble was brewing in Europe as the following articles illustrates.

He volunteered for the Royal Marines in 1940, was commissioned in 1941, and promoted Lieutenant in 1943. He served in the Middle East and took part in the early Sicily landings and was 'mentioned in despatches' for his contribution. His death at the age of 23 on Monday 27^th March 1944 occurred from an accidental explosion while engaged in staff work.

Leonard is buried in Medmenham (St.Peter) Churchyard, Buckinghamshire.
