A note from the Headmaster regarding Exam Results:
The results Wrekin received for national exams this summer were very good. However, the record breaking that we did in so many categories has emphatically not been as a result of exam boards accepting Centre Assessed Grades. At A level, we had exceptional results even before the Government U-turn, and at GCSE we expected the cohort to break records because they are a strong academic year group and that, combined with all the restructuring we have done on the academic side over these last few years with Challenge Grades, Head of Lower School and Middle School roles, Lancaster Learning, Teaching and Learning sessions, revamped appraisal, target setting and a raft of other initiatives all now embedded, has led to this resounding academic success for so many different types of children. I would like to congratulate them all here.
Here are some of the statistics that catch the eye:
At A level: 99.4% pass rate, best on record. A*-A rate was 38%, also a record. That is proof not only that our academically very able pupils do very well indeed here, but also that we add much value to pupils who are bright enough and who are prepared to work hard. There is much heartening evidence here of pupils and staff working so well together.
At BTEC we achieved a 100% pass rate and 88% were Distinction*-Merit (equivalent to A*-B at A level for UCAS points). This is a stunning set of results.
As I hope you know so well by now, Wrekin has a horses for courses approach, and we celebrate all achievements equally; we are as interested in, and as happy for, pupils who choose other goals beyond Sixth Form, and who get them successfully: ones who go onto apprenticeships or straight into employment. The latter is where we all end up, and our Business School is all about ensuring that Wrekinians are useful when they get there sooner or later. Look out for further developments on the Business School front anon. We are leading the way in the Midlands (possibly beyond) via educating our pupils to be employable. It is one thing to hold certificates, but you have to know what to do when you walk thru the doors those certificates open.
Unsurprisingly, given the very high quality of these results, the vast majority of our Leavers got into their choice of university. I am delighted for them particularly because they have been thru an appalling last term full of interruption, doubt and isolation. We have not forgotten them, and when the covid coast is clearer, we will reunite for a proper party.
At GCSE: we had a 97.4% pass rate (grades 9-4, or A*-C in old money), the highest on record. 100% pass rate for pupils for both English and Maths from 5th formers. 22 pupils, nearly a quarter of the year group, got a minimum of eight grades 9-7 (A*-A in old money): a superb achievement. At grades 8-9 (A* in old money), we set a new record at 26%, and at grades 9-7 (A*-A in old money) our statistic was 49%, nearly half of all grades awarded. Here is the evidence that the teaching has been excellent.
I think it is fair to say that the Government U-turn at GCSE meant that we broke these records further than we otherwise would have done. We would have jumped further than before past all these markers, but we have jumped out of the pit. The pupils and teachers (sometimes in that order, sometimes vice versa when a pupil needed shoving…) deserve great credit.
