D of E Bronze Day Walk – Caer Caradoc
Saturday and Sunday, 24th - 25th April 2021

This weekend saw the final training day walk for the Fourth Form boys and girls who are doing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award next term. We are currently playing ‘covid catchup’ so this year group do not miss out on the Bronze Award, especially as a record number have chosen to do it. Twelve groups went out over all, six groups of boys on Saturday and six groups of girls on Sunday.

We normally plan this walk during the classroom sessions in November and then go in January. Lockdown stopped us from doing the walks then so they shifted from the driving rain, cold winds and snow of January to the baking sunshine and crystal clear weather of April. We could well have been in the Mediterranean!

The groups all met at the CCF area on time and with the correct kit so we could get away promptly. After a short drive the minibuses arrived in Carding Mill Valley (Church Stretton). Each group joined their instructor and set off on a full day’s navigation training.

The objectives for the day were to work on many parts of the D of E syllabus, especially teamwork, leadership, safety in the hills, country code, and map and compass work; all with an emphasis on enjoying outdoor activity in a safe manner. Most groups made it to the top of Caer Caradoc with stunning views over the Shropshire plains and excellent views of The Wrekin in the distance.

The boys struggled with some of the navigation to begin with but after a bit of instruction they realised that they could navigate effectively in what is quite challenging terrain for young teenagers. The girls were outstanding and showed real skill and dedication from the outset.

In general, a safe and very useful two days’ training. The pupils will be in a very good place for their qualifying expeditions next term.
