The first of our autumnal Regional Lunches was held at the Astronomer on Tuesday 24
th September. Despite being the wettest day of the year, and the weather causing its fair share of travel disruption, a gathering of seventeen Old Wrekinians assembled in the City to enjoy lunch and catch up with the school.
Guests were amused to find that copies of their school reports had been brought along and Dr Griffiths enjoyed highlighting the summaries given by their Housemaster so they could guess whose report was whose. The reports brought back some good memories of their time at school, but whilst some were very complimentary, others were a little more scathing and encouraged the OWs comment on the particularities of their Housemasters, which with the buffer of fifty years or so, they can begin to see from a different perspective.
With the Supreme Court ruling on Johnson’s prorogation of the Parliament the hot topic of the day, it is unsurprising that discussion drifted to Brexit. It was, however, relatively good-humoured, with Lord Malcolm Bruce commenting that Wrekin must take at least some credit for providing them all with the ability to debate issues such as this and, despite disagreement, take it all in good spirit.
We hope that by the next time we meet, in Spring 2020, things will at least be clearer – but perhaps we won’t hold our breath.
