The Hawker Hurricane squadron, based at RAF Biggin Hill, Kent was briefly deployed to northern France, in support of the British Expeditionary Force before being forced to withdraw.

Raymond, flying Hurricane N2653 was returning from a patrol when he collided with Hurricane N2654 and crashed 5 miles from his temporary French base at 16:00 hrs, near Valenciennes, France on Monday 13^th May 1940. Both pilots were killed and the aircraft written off. Raymond was aged 23 at the time of his death and was buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
