John had served in the Territorial Army [TA] prior to the war. His Regiment served in North Africa at the Battle of Knightsbridge with 25-pounder guns and re-equipping with the M7 Priest self-propelled gun in the second Battle of El Alamein. John was the second OW to die in action on Friday 29th May 1942 and both now lie in the same cemetery - Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya. John was aged 35.

Eldest son of John William Charlton & Gwendoline Mary Owen Charlton of Kelsterton, Flintshire, North Wales.
